Understanding Plantar Fasciitis: Causes and Treatments

At AAL Podiatry in Suffolk and Norfolk, VA, Dr. Jesse Anderson is here to help with plantar fasciitis pain. Here, we'll take a look at the causes and treatments of the condition.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

This common foot condition occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed. The plantar fascia acts like a shock absorber for the body during weight-bearing activities like standing, running, and walking.

When the plantar fascia becomes overstretched, it may develop inflammation and small tears, which may result in heel pain. Most people who develop the condition experience pain on the underside of the heel. The first steps of the morning or the first steps after an extended period of rest tend to be the most painful for people who have plantar fasciitis. Standing or participating in physical activity for long periods of time can also exacerbate the condition.

Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

There are many factors that can lead to the development of plantar fasciitis, including:

  • Abnormal foot mechanics (such as having low or high arches)
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Tight Achilles tendons
  • Age-related changes to the feet
  • Repetitive stress or overuse of the feet (for example, suddenly ramping up a distance running schedule)

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Thankfully, plantar fasciitis usually responds well to treatment and can resolve in as little as a few weeks. Treatments for plantar fasciitis pain include ice therapy, rest, stretching exercises, supportive footwear, and custom orthotics. When you come into the office for your plantar fasciitis appointment, Dr. Anderson will talk with you about your symptoms and make recommendations to help you get back to feeling your best.
